Faced with the challenges of expensive and scarce sex and bondage equipment, compounded by the impact of Covid restrictions and the closure of local venues, we opted to acquire The Better Built Bondage Book* by Douglas Kent and embarked on renovating our personal home playroom, building wonderful DIY sex furniture. *Unfortunately, this book is no longer in production.
The Benefits of DIY BDSM Furniture
When it comes to building your play space, buying ready-made BDSM furniture isn’t your only option—and in many cases, it’s not the best one. Creating your own DIY pieces can bring benefits far beyond saving money.
1. Full Customization
Whether you’re tight on space, have a specific kink in mind, or need a piece to fit your body perfectly, DIY lets you design for your unique needs. Height, width, angles—every detail can be tailored to you and your partner(s).
2. Budget-Friendly
Commercial BDSM furniture can be pricey, especially high-quality pieces. By sourcing your own materials and putting in some elbow grease, you can get a sturdy, safe piece for a fraction of the cost—without sacrificing quality.
3. Privacy
No awkward delivery moments or nosy questions from store clerks. Building your own means you control the process from start to finish, keeping your kink life your business.
4. Emotional Connection
There’s something powerful about playing on a piece you’ve built yourself. The time, effort, and intention you put into the project can deepen the experience and make the furniture feel like a true extension of your dynamic.
5. Skill-Building
From woodworking to upholstery, you might pick up new practical skills—and maybe even discover that building your own gear is as satisfying as using it.
6. Repair & Adaptability
When you know exactly how your furniture is built, repairs and adjustments are simple. Need to add restraints, modify padding, or change its look? Easy.
Just remember: safety first. Always use sturdy, weight-bearing materials, double-check your construction, and when in doubt, consult DIY guides from reputable kink educators.
Your play space is an expression of your desires—why not make it uniquely yours?

DIY Sex Furniture - Home
My favorite piece of furniture. Sir and I built it ourselves, which made it that much more special to us.
Building your own kink and BDSM furniture can be incredibly rewarding—offering customization, discretion, and cost savings.

I purchased a chair from Craigslist for $10, stripped it, stained it, and Sir and I installed mounting brackets for different wands and vibrators. We also attach restraints.
I wanted a sturdy massage table that could be used for all kinds of fun (sensation play, impact play, electric play and wax play) we added restraints.
I purchased a display rack at a thrift store for our floggers, paddles, and other hanging implements of fun.
I converted a sturdy entertainment center into a display case for wands and vibrators, sensation toys, costumes for role play and scenes, violet wand and tens unit. Everything is clearly visible, always clean, charged and ready to go.
We enjoy shopping at local adult stores. Utilizing toys in our dynamic adds so much more fun.
We have a few different floggers, some we have purchase and some I have made myself. I prefer thuddy to stingy but love sensual flogging.
Definitely my favorite from meat claws, Warburton wheels, feathers, paddles, floggers, blindfolds, sensory deprivation, heat and cold.
There are so many items around the house that can be used as pervertables... wooden spoons, spatula, zip ties, saran wrap, rope, ties, belts, clothes pins, credit cards, knives, hairbrush, paint brush, etc.
I have had so much fun designing and decorating our playroom. The walls are full of erotic art from local artists, including a commissioned piece I purchased for Sir.
We have a sex swing, St. Andrew's Cross, spanking bench, good-girl chair, and a tantra chair.
I would love to help other couples add a sex room to their home. I love interior design and home improvement projects.
